Experience the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Iceland, as you navigate one of the most beautiful hiking trails on all the planet, where a new, captivating scene is around every corner!
One of National Geographic's 20 best treks in the world, the Laugavegur Trail stretches for some 55km across the Southern Icelandic highlands through some of the most incredible landscapes the incredible island has on offer. Geothermal springs, rainbow-hued mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, verdant canyons and charcoal-black lava fields, discover the awe-inspiring scenery that is rumoured to be the inspiration behind J.R.R Tolkien's Middle Earth!
Arrive at your designated pick up point in Reykjavík, where you will be meet the rest of the group, and then begin the scenic drive to Landmannalaugar.
The drive takes better between 3 and 4 hours and follows the iconic South Coast route famed for its spectacular natural beauty.
We'll begin the trek in Landmannalaugar a geothermal area that translates as 'People's Pools' and is renowned for its incredible natural beauty. It is home to a myriad of hot springs set amongst dramatic rhyolite mountains (renowned for their colourful hues), including, the highlight of day one's trek, Mt. Brennisteinsalda (the Sulphur Wave), the most colourful of all! We'll also pass the steaming vents of Stórihver “(large spring”) hot spring and the black desert Hrafntinnusker.
We will arrive at our accommodation in the early evening, and enjoy a delicious meal whilst enjoying the stunning surroundings.
After enjoying breakfast with the rest of the group, We'll begin our second day of trekking, continuing through the otherworldly landscapes of the Hrafntinnusker desert, taking in spectacular vistas of the Reykjafjöll rhyolite mountains. We'll then arrive at the peak of Mount Jökultungur, where we'll enjoy awe-inspiring views, before crossing a river on foot (an exciting experience!) to reach the hut at lake Álftavatn where we will enjoy some dinner and then bed down for the night.
After breakfast, we'll begin our third day of trekking by wading through a stream on the way to the volcanic deserts of Maelifellssandur. We will pass two volcanoes along the way, the grassy, cone-shaped Stórasúla, and the striking flat-topped Hattafell. we'll continue through the verdant fields of Emstrur, where, weather permitting, we'll enjoy stunning panoramas of the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull mountain glaciers. As we near our camp (the peaceful Botnar) we'll make a small detour to take in one of Iceland's most beautiful hidden treasures, the breathtaking 200 m-deep, Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon.
After a final breakfast with the group, we'll depart for our final day's hike, passing Mt. Einhyrningur, which translates as Unicorn Mountain, due to its unique shape which resembles the mythical animal. From its summit, we'll enjoy stunning views of Mýrdalsjökull, the fourth largest glacier in Iceland, before continuing on our trail, passing through, rugged, yet verdant landscapes to our final destination Thorsmork which translates “Valley of Thor", as according to legend, the great god created the valley when he struck the mountain range with his hammer. The perfect place to end our journey, the valley is truly beautiful, home to a blend of rugged and verdant scenery, with dense birch forests and a diversity of wildlife.
After spending some time relaxing and enjoying the surroundings (and snapping some all-important pics) we'll depart for Reykjavik, stopping at the spectacular Seljalandsfoss Waterfall along the way.
