Sail To The Statue Of Liberty

What was once a gift from the French is now the quintessential monument of American pride. Looking over the New York skyline in her vintage green hue, with the 7 spikes of her "halo" representing the worlds 7 seas and continents.

A Symbol Of New York

The Statue of Liberty is a huge neoclassical monument that lives on Liberty Island, New York. The island can only be accessed by ferry and private boats are forbidden from docking. The statue was a gift from the French people to the American population to commemorate their alliance in the American revolution.

The Statue of Liberty, or ‘Liberty Enlightening The World’ is visited by over 3 million people every year. It has towered over the people of New York since 1886, is 93 metres high and wears a size 879 shoe.

A great way to get up close to the statue is taking the ferry. This is a lot easier than swimming and won’t get you in trouble. You can also book on to guided tours so you can find out more interesting things than its shoe size.

Entry to the statue is free of charge, however, you have to pay for the ferry to get there – unless you fancy getting wet. There are regular ferry trips to the island and tickets will cost you around $12. This is well worth it to see things up close.

The Statue of Liberty is made of copper which has naturally oxidised. This means a thick green coating known as patina has formed and is what gives the monument its distinctive colour.

If you’re going on to Liberty Island, you should expect things to take between 3-4 hours. This is because of the amount of security and queuing that you need to go through before you can get up close to the statue.
