One of the most fascinating destinations on earth, Rapa Nui, or as it’s more commonly known, Easter Island is a remote Polynesian isle (and Chilean territory) renowned for the iconic and deeply mystifying moai - striking archaeological sculptures depicting oversized human heads.
Carved by the indigenous Rapa Nui people to honour important members of their communities who had passed, the moai (which number closer to 900, and are found throughout the island) are estimated to be at least 500 years old, and vary in size, with the largest (the aptly named El Gigante) standing at over 70 ft tall!
