Good news for budget-savvy travellers: one of the world’s most beautiful destinations is about to get cheaper for Brits!
Sri Lanka has announced that it’s scrapping visa fees for travellers from 33 countries – including the UK – in a bid to give its tourism industry a boost. Currently, British passport holders have to pay around £37.50 for a visa to visit the island nation. But under the new changes, that cost is about to disappear.

This move builds on an existing scheme that already offers free 30-day tourist visas to visitors from countries like India, China, Russia, and Japan. Now, the Sri Lankan government is expanding the list – and the UK has officially made the cut.

The country’s foreign minister, Vijitha Herath, announced the update on July 25, saying that the decision is part of a broader push to drive visitor numbers and position tourism as a key contributor to the country’s economic growth. While ditching visa fees could cost the government nearly £50 million in lost revenue, they’re betting on increased arrivals to make up the difference.
So, what does this mean if you're planning a trip?
Once the new rules kick in (no confirmed start date yet, but it’s expected soon), British travellers will still need to apply for an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) – essentially an e-visa – but the process will be free and straightforward.
Sri Lanka has long been a favourite among adventurous and budget-conscious travellers, with over two million international visitors arriving each year. Brits in particular flock there for its unreal beaches, lush highlands, rich culture, and affordable prices.
