This paradisical island nation is asking tourists to give a little back!

Fiji might be one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and it’s now asking visitors to leave it even better than they found it.

The island nation recently launched Loloma Hour, a new initiative that asks travellers to spend just one hour of their trip taking part in hands-on sustainability projects, everything from coral gardening and reef restoration to mangrove planting and beach cleanups.

The idea? To turn Fiji’s record-breaking tourism boom into a force for good. In 2024, the country welcomed one million visitors for the first time—up nearly 6 percent from the year before—and with new direct flights from Dallas, it’s never been more accessible.

But paradise isn’t without its pressures. Like many Pacific islands, Fiji faces mounting environmental challenges, including plastic pollution and damage to Cakaulevu Reef, the world’s third-largest barrier reef. Loloma Hour hopes to tackle that—one snorkeller, sunbather, or honeymooner at a time.

More than 20 local partners are already on board, from dive lodges to luxury resorts. Activities are tailored to each location and fall under four themes: Wildlife, Coastline, Community, and Reef. Guests can help restore coral with marine biologists on Kokomo Island, count endangered iguanas at Six Senses, or plant mangroves at Shangri-La. Others might collect litter from beaches, support local farms, or even help with traditional clam cultivation.

The best part? You don’t need to leave the beach to make a difference.

It’s all about offering visitors a chance to connect more deeply with the place they came to enjoy—and shifting the focus of tourism from just taking, to giving a little back.

Fiji’s tourism board hopes to reach 5,000 volunteer hours in the first year, and aims to expand the programme even further. Because, as they put it, this isn’t just about the hour—it’s about the mindset.

And honestly, if giving back means snorkelling with reef biologists or planting trees in the sand, we’re in.
