The word “acropolis” translates to mean “high city” — and you can see why.
Towering above Athens on a rocky hill lies 4 temples: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaia, and the Temple of Athena Nike. The most iconic and recognisable of them is the Parthenon. Together they make up an ancient city bursting with history.
There’s also a museum on site which is well worth the visit. It will leave you knowing everything you could want to know about this one-of-a-kind place.
In peak times, tickets are 20€. In the winter months, it’s halved to just 10€.
You can also gain free entry on the following commemorative days: 6th March and 18th April.
There is evidence showing that the hill was inhabited from the 4th millennium BC. However, it is recorded that work was begun on it by Pericles in the 5th century BC.
In the summer, between 8 am –– 8 pm. In the winter, 8:30 am –– 5 pm.
The birthplace of democracy is a sprawling relic in it's own right and one of the oldest named cities in the world. For Greek sun and culture vultures this is an incredible living, breathing museum.
