14 Day Quarantine For UK Arrivals - Announcement Pending

Home secretary, Priti Patel, is likely to announce plans for the UK’s initial mandatory quarantine guidelines. From June, those arriving from abroad whether UK citizens or not must self-isolate for 2 weeks.

Those who are deemed essential workers will not have to abide by the quarantine regulations.

Those arriving will have to share the address where they will be self-isolating for the subsequent 2 weeks. For those breaking these rules a £1,000 fine may be levied against them.

Those without a home to self-isolate will receive accommodation from the government where they will be required to stay.

It’s recommended by the World Health Organisation that mandatory isolation for arriving travellers is set in stone at the onset of an outbreak, and it’s likely that this measure should've been taken sooner. The fact the UK has one of the highest rates of infection is testimony to that theory.

Government officials have said

Now that domestic transmission within the UK is coming under control, and other countries begin to lift lockdown measures, it is the right time to prepare new measures at the border.”

This is not the first talk of a quarantine. On May 10th the P.M, Boris Johnson, informed the nation of a version of quarantine that would only affect those arriving via air.

Another concept of “air-bridges” has become a more widely discussed guideline that will allow exemption from quarantine for visitors travelling from other European nations.

Anyone who is planning to visit the UK would likely be best placed to do so before June, to avoid the mandatory quarantine.

With the prospect of everyone entering the country facing a 2 week mandatory quarantine, it’s likely to put off some Brits from travelling abroad since they too would be exposed to quarantine when returning.

It was in the works for big holiday companies such as Tui and Jet2 to resume operations mid-June. That is now unlikely to go ahead with the new quarantine procedures put in place.

The travel sector has already been severely handicapped and this new stipulation of mandatory quarantine will undoubtedly delay the rebuilding of the travel and tourism sector several months extra.
